Are the Chicago Bears setting up for Tyler Scott to be inactive week one?
The Chicago Bears signed Trent Taylor after he was released this summer. The move is not a surprise in some ways, but definitely brings up other questions. One major question is what will happen with Tyler Scott?
Will Tyler Scott be inactive for the Chicago Bears week one?
The Bears added Trent Taylor to return punts. That part is not surprising because Dante Pettis was the starting punt return option, and now he is on the IR. So, the Bears needed a punt returner and added one.
Still, that makes seven wide receivers. The thought was that if Pettis did make it, it may be at the expense of someone like Equainmeous St. Brown or Velus Jones. However, St. Brown was a number one wideout last year, so he could not play special teams. This year, he is set up to be a core special teams option.
Beyond that, he saw the field with Justin Fields in the preseason and laid a block on the Khalil Herbert touchdown run. The Bears see him having a role on offense. The same can be said of Velus Jones. He still brings that jet sweep ability. Jones also has a defined role on special teams. He will return kicks.
That brings us to Tyler Scott. When we go through the top wide receivers we see that D.J. Moore, Chase Claypool, and Darnell Mooney will all be starting when the time comes. Velus Jones and Equanimeous St. Brown have roles on offense and special teams, and Trent Taylor is the starting punt returner.
Where does Tyler Scott fit in? He is the backup slot and does not have a real role unless someone gets injured on offense. He lost the punt return job to Trent Taylor and never passed up Velus Jones on kicks. He cannot block or play multiple phases of special teams like St. Brown.
The Chicago Bears have to choose five players to be inactive if they carry an eighth offensive lineman. Considering they only have eight linemen signed, all of them have to be active on gamedays.
Travis Homer is a core special teamer. They only have three tight ends, and the third quarterback does not count against them either.
When you start to break down the roster, it is getting harder to find who the inactives will be. With Scott, the question is, what would he do on gamedays to deserve to be active? We will find out soon.
