A lot of players on the Chicago Bears will have questions about whether or not the team should re-sign them. One name that is obviously not coming back is Lucas Patrick. The Bears gave him a shot or two shots too many to prove himself, and it has not worked out.
Chicago Bears will not re-sign Lucas Patrick in free agency
During his first year, the thought was that he could be the center of the future. Then, the injuries started to show. The team had to move him to guard because he could not snap with a broken hand. He played horribly and was stealing snaps from Teven Jenkins. Any extended snaps he got ended with an injury.
In year two, the plan was for him to be depth at center. Then, Jenkins got hurt, and they had to move Whitehair to guard. This pushed Patrick back into the starter role. We saw what would have happened had he been the starter all along, and it was not good.
According to PFF, he ranked 31st out of 38 qualified centers. That is 27th in run blocking and 34th in pass protection of that group. PFF grades are not everything, but most objective fans would think these grades are accurate.
Lucas Patrick was signed because he was the center for the Green Bay Packers the year prior. That is where Luke Getsy came from. With Getsy out of the picture, he no longer has his closest personal relationship with the team.
The combination of his play, his injury status, and the Chicago Bears changing offensive staff makes it obvious that Lucas Patrick is not coming back. The question is, how long does he wait until he signs this offseason, and what team will sign him?
