Why Chicago Bears should re-sign Dan Feeney in free agency
The Chicago Bears have a group of names ready to test free agency this offseason. The team is going to let a good chunk of these players leave as the rebuild continues. One name that will be worth watching as a candidate to return to free agency is Dan Feeney.
Will the Chicago Bears re-sign Dan Feeney in free agency this offseason?
Feeney will be entering his eighth NFL season, but he only played one with the Chicago Bears. Feeney ended up with 90 snaps last year, mostly filling in for injury, but then a week 18 start at center to show the team and other prospects what he can bring to the table.
Feeney was a starter as recently as 2020. However, he was benched and has been a depth piece of the past three years. With that said, his market will not be overwhelming.
The Chicago Bears traded for Feeney. Partially because so many injuries had them desperate for interior line depth. But they also traded for Feeney because they liked what he brought. They also liked him enough this season to give him that week 18 start. Lastly, the team does not have a potential starting center on the roster, assuming they move on from Cody Whitehair this offseason.
For Feeney, how many teams out there will be looking to sign him with a starting center job open, an offensive line coach whom he worked with last year, and the interest in him to trade for him as recently as August? Heck, how many teams want to sign Dan Feeney?
If the Chicago Bears do re-sign Dan Feeney this offseason, it is because they saw nothing of interest and do not even trust him as depth. The odds are that they see more from him and will re-sign Dan Feeny before free agency.
