2. Chicago Bears needed a blocking tight end

More than Luke Getsy having a connection with the new tight end, the team did need this position. Yes, they have Cole Kmet, and then they have Robert Tonyan behind that. From there, things get really questionable.

Jake Tonges and Chase Allen would be competing for the third tight-end spot. Both are former UDFAs who found a way to stay through one season and are now entering year two. Tonges stuck on the roster last year, but he really did not have much of a role as he was a pseudo fullback/tight end who actually did not play either. Allen was called up late in the year and got some work, but neither did anything to lock themselves onto the roster.

Where the Bears current roster status was, both Tonges and Allen had a good shot at making it, and one of them had to be a lock. That is not where a competitive roster should be, as they were depth players on a one-win team and hardly made an impact.

So, now only one of Tonges or Allen will make the roster, and there is also a chance that neither will make it if they do not show enough. Based on their play last year, that is where their status should be.

More than that, the Bears needed a blocking tight end in the worst way. Tonyan is not a blocker by any means, and that meant that Cole Kmet was the best blocker on the team. That is fine, but in order for Kmet to ascend as a pass catcher, they needed an in-line option to flex him out more.

Now, they can use Kmet in-line and flex out Tonyan or use Lewis in-line and flex out Kmet, depending on the look. The fit was perfect, the need was there, and the depth was questionable. This was an easy call.
