The Chicago Bears made a serious splash when they went out and paid Tremaine Edmunds the big bucks. Edmunds will join T.J. Edwards, who just recently signed as well as Jack Sanborn as the trio who would hold things down next season.

So, now that Edmunds is on the team, what is there to know about Tremaine Edmunds?

5. Comparing Tremaine Edmunds to recent contracts

This is going to be the first thing that so many fans have to look at. The Chicago Bears traded Roquan Smith, then they went out and paid Tremaine Edmunds. Does it make sense? Well first, getting a second-round pick to sign Edmunds over Smith helps. Beyond that, as you can see below, Smith got the worst deal of the top linebackers from his draft class.

Player

Years

AAV

Tremaine Edmunds

$50M

Roquan Smith

$20M

$60M

Shaq Leonard

$52.5

Fred Warner

$40.5

It is a reasonable deal, and it is big money. Still, it is fewer years, has less average value, and besides Fred Warner, it is fewer guarantees. Both Leonard and Smith beat Warner in guaranteed money, mainly because these two signed after Warner. Usually, the last player will set the market, and not the best player.

However, even after Smith and Leonard topped $50M, that is all that Edmunds saw. Considering Edmunds is the only one of these names to hit free agency, it is a bit surprising that his deal is the most team-friendly. You would think the bidding war would have driven his price up, while the others were only talking to one team. Either way, Edmunds came in under his peers.

You can really make the case that both Roquan Smith and Ryan Poles were right in their stalemate last season.

Poles may have offered Smith the same exact deal, and he turned it down. Now, Poles gets Edmunds on the same deal and a second-round pick. He is happy. On the flip side, Roquan Smith wanted a longer deal, for more average value, and more guaranteed money. He got all of that as well.
