1. Chicago Bears have the cap space

The Chicago Bears paid a surprising price tag for Yannick Ngakoue, especially when you consider the timing of the signing. Teams are going to play preseason games about one week from now, and if multiple suitors were lining up to pay Ngakoue, he would have been gone by now. So, did the team overpay?

While it is possible, it is hard to say that the team overpaid when you look at their cap situation. First, it is a one-year deal, so it does not impact the future much. They could have rolled the cap space over to next year, but fans would rather see them go for it.

More than that, they have plenty of cap space next year. As noted, Ngakoue will not be on the books, and the team still can roll over plenty of space. They are not hurting, and rather they needed to spend to continue to get to the cash spending floor this season.

So, the team needed a pass rush after going all-in on run defense this offseason. They can handle the run defense lows because of this. When you add in that the cap space is not going to push the team up against any limit, it is hard to be too disappointed about this decision.
