Does it make sense for the Chicago Bears to be inquiring about a trade for this star?

Chris Jones is in the final year of his four-year deal worth $80 million dollars. Jones is set to earn a little over $20 million dollars this season. Apparently, being in the final year of his contract with no guarantee of a future deal was enough of a concern that he is currently holding out this season. Andy Reid doesn't seem happy about the situation — stated no communication has taken place. It will be interesting to see if either side caves or at least comes to a compromise over the situation. The thing is, maybe a trade happens instead and rumors are swirling that the Chicago Bears might be interested.

When it comes to the offseason, as soon as anyone sniffs any type of trade rumors, fans and media (mostly national) take the rumor and run with any team that seems like a fit for the player. We have seen this happen all offseason for the Chicago Bears since the roster was heavily depleted, the team has some serious draft capital and also a large amount of salary cap space.

The problem is that those three things don't mean that a trade actually makes sense. We saw rumors that the Chicago Bears should be interested in trading for Dalvin Cook, Josh Jacobs, Jonathan Taylor and now Chris Jones. I'll be honest, I'm probably missing some additional names off the top of my head. It is like whoever sounds interesting enough becomes the flavor of the week. Well, right now, that flavor seems to be Chris Jones.

Trading for Chris Jones seems like a stretch for the Chicago Bears

I will admit, that it does at least sound intriguing. I'll also admit, I'd think that a Chris Jones trade would be more likely than a Jonathan Taylor trade. There is obviously a connection here with Ryan Poles and Jones is one of the best 3-tech defensive linemen in the league. See, what isn't there to like?

Well, the rumors that the Chicago Bears are interested could be true, but I'd have to think that interest is more about due diligence than anything else. Ryan Poles likely called the Chiefs to see what they might be looking for should they decide to trade Chris Jones. However, Poles has made it clear he wants to build through the NFL Draft. He did that this year by drafting two interior defensive linemen, Gervon Dexter and Zacch Pickens. He also added Andrew Billings in free agency.

The big question becomes, why would Ryan Poles trade what would likely need to be a first-round pick (and maybe more) for a 29-year-old defensive tackle who wants more than the $20 million he is earning this season? Poles would have to trade for Jones and then look to pay him an astronomical amount of money. I just don't see it based on where this team currently stands, no matter how great Jones is or how well he fits this system. They are not quite close enough for a finishing move of this caliber. Agree or disagree?
