1. Velus Jones is right on the roster border with the Chicago Bears

The Chicago Bears have to be getting closer to the end of the road with Velus Jones. They do not want to give up on the third-round pick so early, but at the same time, they have to think about the sunk cost of keeping someone on the roster with limited value.

Velus Jones is essentially phased out of the offense. Equanimeous St. Brown remains more valuable, and Tyler Scott has shown to be a better wideout both outside and in the slot. Jones fumbled another punt return, and the experiment has to be running thin in that area.

He also hardly played any other phases of special teams after getting some work in coverage last year. That helped keep him active. Still, St. Brown is better there, and now that he is playing less, he can get more special teams work.

If he does not get work on any of those phases, he is limited to just kick returns. Even the new kick return rules have limited his value as well.

So, the Chicago Bears could keep him for one minor reason. Or, Khalil Herbert, Tyler Scott, or potentially someone like Trestan Ebner could make the roster as a kick returner, and the team could save that roster spot for someone like Adrian Colbert or Jaylon Jones, who play multiple special teams phases. Jones has to show up the next two weeks, or his roster spot is in jeopardy.
