Chicago Bears Weakest Position No. 3: Offensive Tackle

For the record, if this list was looking beyond 2023, offensive tackle wouldn’t be here. However, if we narrow the scope to just 2023, it’s understandable that offensive tackle could be a bit of a weak spot.

The Chicago Bears will have second-year player Braxton Jones and rookie Darnell Wright manning the ship on the outside. Both players are talented and have the potential to be franchise cornerstones, but potential alone won’t suffice this season.

Jones was a mauler in the run game but was inconsistent as a pass blocker and struggled in true pass sets. Wright appears to have the opposite problem, as he’s been touted as an elite pass-blocker but is a work in progress in the run game.

Additionally, offensive tackle is one of the hardest positions for rookies to play. Even some of the best offensive tackles in the game today had less-than-stellar starts to their careers. Wright played in an unconventional scheme at Tennessee and it wouldn’t be the most shocking thing if it took him some time to adjust to the pro game.

Fans should be excited about the future duo of Jones and Wright, but that optimism shouldn’t lead to high expectations for 2023.
