The Chicago Bears are releasing Eddie Jackson this offseason. The move is not a surprise, especially when you consider the cap savings. Chicago will save over $12M towards the salary cap in 2024 by making the move. Jackson is still a quality player, but his age, injury status, and play say that the current cap hit is too much.
Could the Chicago Bears end up re-signing Eddie Jackson?
Still, there is a path for Jackson to play on the Chicago Bears as soon as next year, even if they cut him. As noted, things are not going in the way of Jackson. After four interceptions in 2022, he dropped back down to one interception last year. He missed more tackles and more games due to injury this year than the year prior as well.
So, while the Bears will not want him on that salary, right now, no one will. Jackson could take a look at his market and realize it is not very strong.
While the Bears saw his decline in play last season, they also know what he brings. They know he is valuable in the locker room and helps with the culture. They know that he is comfortable with Jaquan Brisker, and the two know their roles. The Bears also see that the defense is growing, and continuity could cause a big step forward next year. Sure, Jackson is not worth over $12M that they can save on the salary cap, but is worth something as a starter.
If the Chicago Bears have an offer that is close to the best, if not the best, and the familiarity is there, why would he spurn them just because they did not want him at that cost? No team will sign him to that deal. Jackson should take the best deal, and that could still be the Chicago Bears. Will the Bears have interest or look younger with that money?
