2. and 1. Chicago Bears were relying on these linebackers too much in 2023

The Chicago Bears went above and beyond to add linebackers this offseason. Their depth in this group is better than any area. That may have been an overcompensation for how things unfolded last season.

The Chicago Bears signed Matt Adams and Joe Thomas last season. Adams was a former Colts player, while Thomas was a veteran who has bounced around the NFL. For the most part, they filled in as the SAM, but once Roquan Smith was traded, and Jack Sanborn was injured, the role grew.

Joe Thomas played 413 snaps last year, and Matt Adams played 189. They were leaning on them a bit too much. Now, the thought is that those snaps would go to someone like Jack Sanborn and Noah Sewell.

So, neither of those two are signed right now. In the case of all five, they probably will find a home at some point. However, there is a reason that they have had to wait this long. They all had big roles on the 2022 Chicago Bears, and many people in the NFL think their presence starting or having a big role contributed to that. None of these moves were good by Ryan Poles, even at the low cost.
