All signs continue to point to the Chicago Bears avoiding a serious injury with rookie wide receiver Rome Odunze.
Despite reports on Monday that Odunze suffered a Grade 1 MCL Sprain during the Bears' season-opening win against the Tennessee Titans, the Bears remained optimistic that Odunze avoided a serious setback during his rookie season. While national reporters called Odunze's injury a week-to-week injury, Matt Eberflus maintained that the rookie was day-to-day.
Further proof of the Bears' confidence that Odunze's injury wasn't serious came on Friday when he was able to participate in practice in a limited capacity. It was an optimistic sign that Odunze would be able to play on Sunday night against the Houston Texans.
Adam Schefter of ESPN seemed to have confirmed that expectation, reporting on Sunday morning that Odunze is trending toward playing against the Texans.
Is Rome Odunze playing today?
While speaking with reporters on Friday, Odunze confirmed that he was told by the Bears' medical team that there is no further injury concern if he were to play through the sprain on Sunday night. Odunze suggested it was more a pain-tolerance decision and it seems that he will be ready to play when the Bears take the field against the Texans.
The Bears will need Odunze considering Keenan Allen's questionable status. For all the talk that Caleb Williams is in one of the greatest positions a rookie quarterback has ever been in, the injuries to Odunze and Allen depleted the Bears' wide receiver depth to the extent that it was the same thin room that they had last season with quarterback Justin Fields.
If Allen is sidelined, Odunze could see an expanded role in the Bears' offense despite the injury. The Bears also elevated wide receiver Collin Johnson from the practice squad on Saturday.
