The biggest news over the weekend was the contract extension that Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love signed.

Friday proved to be the day for quarterbacks to be paid as Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa signed a four-year deal worth $212.4MM. At the time, it was a record-breaking deal as Tua's $53.1MM average per season was the highest on a four-year deal in NFL history. The record did not last long as later on Friday, Love and the Packers agreed to a four-year deal worth $220MM.

Jordan Love's contract extension opens an important window for the Chicago Bears.

With the contract extension that the Packers gave Love, Green Bay no longer has as much financial flexibility as it did over the past two offseasons. This is an important lesson for the Chicago Bears, who have had quarterbacks fail to earn a second contract with the team since 2017.

First thing's first, if Caleb Williams proves to be the franchise quarterback that the Bears believe he is, we likely will be getting word in two years time of a historic contact extension. In the meantime, if Williams does succeed right away, the Bears will have a financial advantage over the Packers for, at least, the next two seasons.

It's what the Bears thought they were doing right with Mitch Trubisky prior to the 2018 season. The Bears' front office was of the belief that Trubisky would take a step up on his production with head coach Matt Nagy and while on his rookie deal, the team traded for Khalil Mack and signed him to a historic contract extension for a defensive player. Where the plan failed for the Bears is after the opening game of the 2019 season, it became clear that the team got the quarterback position wrong and instead of focusing on adding pieces to a developing Trubisky, their time was spent once again trying to solve the quarterback position.

Williams is in a far better situation to succeed in his first full-season as the team's starting quarterback. While he does not have to have immediate success in order for the Bears to contend, if he does, the Bears will be able to finally reap the benefits of having a great quarterback on a rookie deal.
