Former quarterback speaks up regarding the Chicago Bears decision about Justin Fields

The Chicago Bears have a big decision to make once the 2023 season comes to an end. Will they stick with Justin Fields or look to draft a top quarterback prospect in the 2024 NFL Draft?

The Chicago Bears are still sitting at two wins on the season. One win was while Justin Fields was starting at quarterback and the other was while Tyson Bagent was under center. Fans seemed very split as many still believed in Justin Fields, while others were screaming for Bagent to continue to start. The loss to the Saints was a tale of two halves for Bagent and I think four turnovers by Bagent in that game have led to at least the Bagent supporters slowing down on their agenda. Now, the question is, how does the Bears' organization feel about the situation? Will they look to retain Fields or not?

The team will need to wait at least one more week before they see Justin Fields back in action. Tyson Bagent is starting on Thursday night against the Panthers. Fields is doubtful to play and Eberflus already slipped up and said he won't be playing. It was a weird exchange.

As of right now, the Chicago Bears own the second and third overall picks in the 2024 NFL Draft. Things can obviously change over the next eight games, but the likelihood of the Bears not owning at least one top-three pick seems slim since they own not only their own first-round pick but also the Carolina Panthers' first-round pick. The Panthers' draft slot is currently second, while the Bears are third. The Cardinals own the top pick in the draft. With Kyler Murray returning soon, though, it's possible the Cardinals will find a few more wins. Owning the top pick in the 2024 NFL Draft would be huge.

Ryan Leaf declares Justin Fields has shown enough to the Chicago Bears

Ryan Leaf was on Football Night Chicago and asked what Justin Fields needs to show to be the franchise quarterback of the Chicago Bears this season.

"I felt like he was showing it. This is where we were headed and unfortunately the injury happened. I expect when he comes back, they don't miss a step. Bagent is not Justin Fields. I don't think Caleb Williams is Justin Fields to be honest with you. I don't think Drake Maye is. I think Justin Fields is your guy. "

I have come around to the idea that I'd rather Ryan Poles bring in an elite LT prospect to pair with Marvin Harrison, Jr. than draft Caleb Williams or Drake Maye. Then, look at drafting another QB on Day 2. Olu Fashanu and Marvin Harrison, Jr. would look fantastic in a Chicago Bears uniform for years to come. Having Braxton Jones be the swing tackle screams a quality offensive line. Now go find a center and this offensive line looks to be one of the best in the league.

Ryan Leaf was also on C.J. Stroud, ranking him his top quarterback prospect last year. I too had Stroud as the top quarterback. The Chicago Bears need to make a coaching decision also. If they fire Matt Eberflus, I think bringing in a new QB makes plenty of sense. If Eberflus stays, Fields has to be the guy. I want Fields to show us enough over the last seven weeks to make fans feel the same way I do about him plus two top-5 draft prospects. That said, I want Eberflus gone and therefore, I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place. Still leaning Fields (agree with Ryan Leaf) even with a new coach.
