One quarterback has helped lead his team to a 3-1 start on the season and sits atop his division. The other is currently 2-2 on the year and struggling to stay out of the bottom of his division. Yet, Caleb Williams is already proving to be the better quarterback than former Chicago Bears QB, Justin Fields.
For all of you Justin Fields truthers out there who think I'm a hater, I think you need to go back and read my content all of last year and even into the offseason. I have been a supporter of Fields dating back to his days in Ohio. I supported him throughout his entire tenure here in Chicago but even I understood that Caleb Williams was a better prospect than Fields.
The good news is, I am still rooting for the Bears' former quarterback out of Ohio State and he's proving that he deserves to be a starter in the NFL. Not to mention, if he starts at least 51% of the season, the Chicago Bears will receive a fourth-round pick for him from Pittsburgh instead of the sixth-rounder the team currently owes for Fields.
Recent QB power rankings have Caleb Williams ahead of Justin Fields
Before I get into why I think Caleb Williams is already proving to be the better quarterback, let's look at the 33rd Team's Week 5 QB Power Rankings as further proof. Dan Pizzuta has Caleb Williams ranked 22nd and Justin Fields ranked 23rd as the NFL transitions from Week 4 to Week 5 of the season.
According to Pizzuta, Week 4 against the Rams was Caleb Williams' best game. Funny how many Chicago Bears fans are upset by the fact that Williams only threw for 157 yards despite not turning the ball over, throwing a beautiful touchdown pass to DJ Moore, and finishing with a 73.9% completion percentage. Not to mention this was his best game from a QB rating at 106.6. Pissuta is right, though. Williams has shown growth and improvement each week, and Week 4 was his best.
Justin Fields is having one Hell of a season. The Steelers are in the driver's seat to win the AFC North. Fields had his best game of the 2024 season in Week 4, too, despite the Steelers losing their first game. Fields threw for 312 yards and a touchdown. He also added two touchdowns and another 55 yards on the ground. It was one of Fields' best games of his career and further proves why wins are not a QB stat. He struggled early but came on strong to try and bring the Steelers to victory.
Pizzuta explains how the Steelers are keeping Fields reeled in a bit. He's throwing shorter passes more often as 82.1% of his passes traveled within 10 yards in Week 4. Pizzuta talks about how hitting on his shorter passes allows the offense to remain on the field longer while limiting his mistakes. He also mentions how the best version of Fields is a combination of this plus a few explosive plays like we have seen in both Chicago and Pittsburgh.
Here is the thing though. There are things we are seeing from Caleb Williams that tell us he's ahead of where Justin Fields was and how he's already hit Fields' floor in only four NFL starts. Williams already sees things better at the line of scrimmage. Williams gets the ball out faster because he has a faster release and reads defenses better. Williams is making calls and checks that we rarely saw from Fields through his first four years, let alone his first four starts.
The other thing that Caleb Williams is doing better than Fields has ever done is maintaining the pocket and going through his progressions, all while throwing with anticipation. I am still rooting for Fields and I love what I am seeing from him with the Steelers, but these guys are very different quarterbacks. It's proven that quarterbacks who can operate from within the pocket, throw with anticipation, and can consistently read a defense are more successful than running and scrambling quarterbacks. Now, add in the off-script stuff that they both do, wow.
All we need now is for Caleb Williams to start hitting those deep balls.
