4. The Chicago Bears still have Trevis Gipson down on the depth chart
After Trevis Gipson had an excellent performance in the preseason opener, many wondered if that meant that he was a lock for the roster. While there is still a chance for him to make that move, it is significant to note that Gipson did not move up the depth chart despite the great outing.
This was expected, but now was confirmed. Yannick Ngakoue and DeMarcus Walker sat out as they are the big-name starters. Rasheem Green and Dominique Robinson started because they were a free-agent signing and draft pick by Ryan Poles.
Then, Terrell Lewis came in for a NASCAR package in which Green slid inside, Gervon Dexter stayed on the field, and Lewis was an edge rusher across from Robinson. The Bears running specific packages with all of the competition Gipson has is probably not a good sign.
Then, Gipson played fine but did not have a repeat performance. He did not play starter-level players, but the competition was a bit better than last week, and we saw that Gipson was not impacting the game once again.
He came into week one of the preseason as the sixth edge rusher, and with one week to go in the preseason he will be in the same spot. He still needs a strong weekend to make the roster.
