5 Matchups to watch for the Chicago Bears against the Green Bay Packers
By Evan Bruner
No. 1: Justin Fields vs. Jordan Love
Unlike the other matchups on this list, Love and Fields will not be matched up against one another on the field. Still, this battle feels too important not to discuss.
It is common knowledge that quarterback is the most important position. The Packers have had the upper hand here for years, which is the main reason why they’ve been so dominant against the Bears.
This season, however, Justin Fields has the chance to flip the script. He is entering his third year as the team’s starter and has the best supporting cast of his NFL career. On the other side, Love is entering his fourth season, but his first as a starter.
It isn’t just the edge in experience that makes Bears fans confident. Fields is one of the most dynamic players in the league and improved passing to go with his elite rushing could elevate him to one of the top quarterbacks in the conference.
The key for Fields will be improvements in the short pass game. If he can make plays in the quick game on early downs, it will open up options for Chicago on third down. Otherwise, we are likely to see the same volatility that hurt the Bears in 2022.
Love’s scouting report is harder to gauge, given his limited game reps. Overall, he seems to have calmed down considerably since his days at Utah State. But the more conservative play style can be viewed as a double-edged sword. Love scaling back on the aggressiveness that made him a high interception player his final year at Utah State, has simultaneously made him less likely to generate many explosive pass plays.
The key for Love against Chicago is simply to not make any big mistakes. Green Bay still feels like they have the superior roster, so the Bears’ best hope for leveling the playing field is to win the QB battle. The performance from Love and Fields Sunday will not only shape the outcome of the game, but it could also serve as a sign of what the rivalry’s future holds.
