The Chicago Bears backup QB job

The Bears quarterback position has been the talk of the league over the last week, and that somehow has nothing to do with Justin Fields. Tyler Bagent has displayed composure rarely seen from an undrafted free agent signal-caller. In contrast, presumed backup PJ Walker, whom the team signed to a two-year, $4 million deal this offseason, has looked completely lost while operating the second-team offense.

The quarterback depth chart already underwent changes after the first game, as Bagent jumped Nathan Peterman (who should have a spot on the practice squad) in last week's game against the Colts. However, there is reason to believe he could even overtake Walker for the backup job if he continues to impress and Walker struggles to get it in gear against Buffalo.

Matt Eberflus has seemingly taken notice of Bagent's impressive preseason, confirming the backup quarterback competition is wide open this week. It seems unlikely that Walker will get pushed off the roster altogether, as the Bears will likely keep three signal-callers, but calling him a disappointment would be an understatement, as there were relatively high expectations for him after starting five games in Carolina last year.

Bagent has probably already done too much to get stashed away on the practice squad, and he can cement his roster spot with another solid performance against the Bills. Meanwhile, Walker will need a solid showing to get back on track and hold off the young buck for the backup job.
