10 major questions Chicago Bears must answer week 2 at Tampa Bay Buccaneers
8. Who will start in the slot for the Chicago Bears?
The Chicago Bears have serious questions in their slot right now. Kyler Gordon is on the IR with a hand injury. His backup, Josh Blackwell, has not practiced all week. Blackwell missed most of the offseason with injuries and could not play in the preseason. So, it is no shock that when he came in cold, it only took him ten snaps to tweak his hamstring.
That means the Chicago Bears will be on their third option at slot cornerback. When you consider the hamstring injury is the least concerning, they may be out both cornerbacks for more than just this week. So, who steps in there?
There are about three options. First, it could be Greg Stroman, who was called up from the practice squad. He started in the slot in the preseason and would be the technical next man up. The team could also start rookie Terrel Smith, and push Tyrique Stevenson into the slot. He has slot experience. They also could try Smith in the slot, but he does not have slot experience.
It will depend on the comfort of the team in Stevenson or Smith. If they think either can handle the slot, they will. Still, with Chris Godwin expected to see slot work, this is a major issue.
