2. Chicago Bears got a better run defender

Fans are going to wonder why the team did not sign Yannick Ngakoue and went for Rasheem Green instead. This is something we knew that was coming, but it caught others off-guard. The difference, beyond two years in age, is run defense.

Last season Rasheem Green had 19 run stops, per PFF. That is more than any of the edge rushers in Chicago. Trevis Gipson had 11, Al-Quadin Muhammad had ten and Yannick Ngakoue had 10. Green had a 6.6% stop rate, while Ngakoue was at 3.5%. Once again, no one was higher on the Chicago Bears.

In terms of missed tackles, Ngakoue is at 21%, and Green is at 12%. In terms of grade, PFF has Ngakoue at 43.7, and Green at 62.9. They are not close, Green is much better against the run.

As noted, Green is not just better than the potential free agent, he is as good as anyone on the roster. Green was not quite as good as DeMarcus Walker, who had 14 stops, but a 9.6% stop rate, and 4.3% missed tackles. Still, it is obvious the Chicago Bears focused on improving their awful run defense, thinking that they can get a pass rush in the 2023 NFL draft.
