Stock Down: 10 Chicago Bears stumbling down the depth chart after preseason week 2
9. Trevis Gipson cannot make up ground on the Chicago Bears depth chart
A lot of people see Trevis Gipson as the big winner of the preseason, and that is fair. However, while his stock has not plummeted, he entered training camp on the border of the roster. So far, he is still edge rusher six after two weeks.
It is clear that he will not catch or pass up Yannick Ngakoue or DeMarcus Walker. They are being given the starter treatment. However, even after his strong week one, Gipson failed to get the start over Dominique Robinson and Rasheem Green. Worse than that, Green and Robinson are playing roles in the defense, such as Robinson dropping into coverage and Green sliding inside to line up against guards.
Both of them are developing in ways that the coaches want to see. Yes, Gipson dominated against bad competition, but we always knew he could do that. He freezes up when the competition gets better. Even against the Colts, he had a worse game. What hurts is that Terrell Lewis had another strip sack.
If he was going to catch anyone on the depth chart, it would have been Lewis. However, Lewis was better in OTAs, he was better in training camp, he was just as good in week one, and now he was better in week two. It is hard for Gipson to rise up if he cannot pass anyone on the depth chart. All of that work just to be where he was two weeks ago is not fun.
