The Chicago Bears got the benefit of having four preseason games this summer. That, along with the Bears going 3-0 in the first three preseason games has the team feeling good about where they stand. They are feeling so good that Matt Eberflus decided that the majority of the starters will sit out the preseason finale as they rest up for the regular season.
The key word here is majority. Eberflus did not say that all starters will sit, and in fact, he implied that a few will still play, despite the majority sitting. One player who still needs to start this week is Nate Davis.
The Chicago Bears should start Nate Davis in the preseason finale
First, we do not know for sure that Davis is even a starter. He has worked with the starters in the past two weeks, but that is only because he is healthy and Ryan Bates is not. When Davis was hurt, it was Bates starting at right guard, so it truly could be either or.
Davis was banged up last summer and also had a personal issue to attend to. This caused him to be rusty in week one, and he was one of the huge reasons the offense looked awful.
Then, Davis missed time and when he returned it once again took him a few weeks to shake the rust off. He missed time and came back a third time, once again needing to shake off the rust.
We do not need to see Davis every day to assume that he is rusty, there is no way that he can miss as much time as he has and hit the ground running. He is unlikely to play much, but the Bears need to see him suit up and get through a couple of drives with his health intact.
When you add in that he still has to actually lock down a starting spot, he is one of the few potential starters we must see take the field.
