This Chicago Bears player may be a fantasy football sleeper

When the Chicago Bears signed D’Andre Swift the thought was that he was going to be the lead back for the team. It is evidenced by Swift being drafted as the 21st running back off of the board in fantasy football drafts while Khalil Herbert is drafted 59th. However, if we learned anything this weekend it should be that this gap needs to be much tighter.

The Chicago Bears played all of their offensive starters with Caleb Williams in the second preseason game. The team wanted to give Williams a feel at how it would look for him to run out on the field with the offense and run a drive with the group, shuffling players in and out.

They did just that, too. While Swift got the start, Khalil Herbert ended up with more snaps with Williams overall than the big free-agent acquisition. Swift had an electric catch, so you could argue that the team saw enough and wanted to limit him.

Is Khalil Herbert a fantasy football sleeper for the Chicago Bears?

Still, they ran everyone else out with Williams, so it would be hard to say he is much more accomplished than Keenan Allen or D.J. Moore who got both drives with Williams. Beyond that, Herbert already checked in for Swift before Swift had his explosive catch and run.

The other argument is that this will be much more of a split than expected. Swift is likely still the fantasy back to own and you saw that on his one big catch. That is the lay style you should expect with Swift, though. He is going to create big plays but at the same time, he is not big enough and does not have the inside rushing prowess that allows him to get a full workload.

So, someone has to take some of these carries if Swift is not going to be a workhorse. The Bears liked Herbert and trusted him to be their lead back heading into week one of last season. Injuries, offensive line play, and some issues from Herbert held him back, but now that he will be in a much more even split with Swift, it could lead to him making the most of his touches.

Swift could be worth his value due to his big-play nature, but Herbert may be a screaming value because he can hit the same and may get similar opportunities. Do not sleep on how involved Herbert was with Williams on the field.
