This NFL Free Agent connection to the Chicago Bears is obvious
The Chicago Bears are going to have to address the edge rusher position, even after the Montez Sweat trade. They may draft the position, but even if they do, adding a veteran in free agency would make plenty of sense. One name that has to be connected to the Chicago Bears is Tyquan Lewis.
Tyquan Lewis was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in 2018. That was also the year that Matt Eberflus was hired by the Colts to be their defensive coordinator, so Eberflus had a say in drafting Lewis, and Lewis got his career started under Eberflus.
Lewis has always been a rotational player, but he had a good run under Eberflus and earned a new deal with the Colts because of it. Lewis had 8.5 sacks in four years with Eberflus, including the 2021 season, where he had four sacks, which tied his career high.
Lewis is coming off of a season with 44 pressures and four sacks. For comparison, Rasheem Green recorded two sacks on 14 pressures for the Bears last season. This is what they would be signing Lewis for, both in terms of money and role.
Matt Eberflus will push the Chicago Bears to sign Tyquan Lewis in free agency.
Compared to Rasheem Green, he would be an upgrade, both as a run defender and pass rusher. He has played six NFL seasons, and four of them were in a Matt Eberflus defensive scheme, so it would be easy for him to jump into the rotation and hit the ground running.
Now that Eberflus has the job safety, he can continue to mold the defense in his image, and that may mean bringing in a familiar name who he knows will buy into the culture he is setting. For a depth edge rusher, there are worse names that they could sign than Tyquan Lewis.
