Will Levis gives Bears zero credit for their Week 1 victory over Titans
By Ryan Heckman
The Chicago Bears came out flat in Week 1 against the Tennessee Titans. It wasn't a pretty first half. In fact, it was the polar opposite.
Rookie quarterback Caleb Williams watched as some of his receivers dropped passes, and that was on downs he actually had some time to throw. The offensive line struggled all afternoon, which is a big reason why Williams' rookie NFL debut did not go as planned.
In the end, though, the Bears came out with the win. It was the defense and special teams which provided the lift in this one. Chicago did not score a single offensive touchdown, but scored 24 points thanks to three Cairo Santos field goals, a blocked punt returned for a touchdown and a pick-six off the arm of Titans quarterback Will Levis.
Speaking of Levis, the second-year passer has seen better performances. The Bears defense dominated Levis, but he wasn't ready to admit as much.
After the game, Levis seemed to insinuate his play was the reason the Bears won, giving no credit to Chicago.
"I kinda handed it over to them," Levis told the Tennessee media.
Neither quarterback played well today, but if Levis thinks he handed the game to the Bears, he's got another thing coming.
The pressure clearly got to him. That pressure came because of a Bears defensive front determined to pick it up in the second half, including pass rusher Darrell Taylor, recently acquired from Seattle.
The Darrell Taylor trade is already looking like a steal for Ryan Poles
At the tail end of camp, the Bears made a couple of trades to try and improve their pass rush. The one which is already reaping huge dividends was the one that saw Chicago trade for Taylor in exchange for just a sixth-round pick.
In his Bears debut, Taylor recorded eight tackles (seven solo), 2.0 sacks, two tackles for loss and two quarterback hits.
The Bears may not have made a splash move to find another top-tier pass rusher over the course of the offseason, but Taylor is looking like a total steal after just one outing. Between he, Montez Sweat, DeMarcus Walker, Austin Booker and Daniel Hardy, Chicago is hoping they've got enough at the position in order to make some noise.
If Booker is able to get some more run as a rookie, the Bears might just have found a couple of gems in he and Taylor.
As for Levis, better luck next week against the Jets. Note: be better than you were against the Bears.
Not sorry, Will.
