No matter what Ben Johnson wants to say, the Chicago Bears made a statement with their 34-17 Week 8 win over the Seattle Seahawks. Fans could argue that Bears wide receiver Rome Odunze made an equally loud statement on the field.

Of course, all the attention was on Jeffery Simmons in his Bears debut, taking care of business with a sack and multiple great plays. While Chicago's defense was handling the Seahawks' offense, the Bears' offense stunned everyone with 363 yards of total offense and 237 passing yards, the highest against Seattle's vaunted defense this season.

Luther Burden made some nice plays in the passing game, as he tried to establish himself as the Bears' WR1. Odunze had something to say after all the noise about his teammate over the past few weeks, with a highly impressive performance.

Rome Odunze stepped up to the plate and shined for Bears

Odunze has had some nice performances this season despite not eclipsing 100 yards in a game in 2026. He's been efficient, but over the last few games, Burden's emergence has overshadowed him.

The Seahawks game saw Odunze start slowly through the first half, not catching a pass until late in the second quarter. It took one second quarter drive to open the floodgates for Odunze.

Chicago's second-to-last drive of the first half saw Odunze make a great reaching catch for 18 yards on second-and-five. He also made a 24-yard grab to get the Bears into field goal range, and they converted.

On the second drive of the second half, Odunze once again took over and ripped apart the Seahawks' secondary. He caught a 23-yard pass on the first play of the drive, then caught a 22-yard pass on the third to help set up a D'Andre Swift touchdown run.

Odunze finished the game with four receptions for 87 yards, averaging a staggering 21.8 yards per reception. He led the Bears in receptions with 87 yards.

It took one game for Rome Odunze to reestablish himself as Bears' WR1

I have been critical of Odunze for being inconsistent as a receiver in this offense and not taking the WR1 job as he should. As the Bears' former ninth overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, he hasn't run with the job or commanded Caleb Williams' full attention in the passing game.

He might not have caught a touchdown in the Seahawks game, but Odunze sent a message with his performance. The great thing was that he created enough separation on each reception to make the catch and gain extra yards. Because of that separation, he gained at least 18 yards on every catch.

That was the kind of performance Bears fans needed to see from their young receiver after a mixed bag of a season. Because of that game, Odunze is now pacing for 994 yards for the season, just six yards short of his first-career 1,000-yard season.

Odunze is trending in the right direction and has stolen the spotlight from Burden for now. Now it's about seeing him string together back-to-back games as the top target in the passing game.
