The height of the Chicago Bears' offseason, thus far, came back when Ryan Poles decided to hire Ben Johnson as the team's next head coach.
It was a feeling of excitement unlike any in recent memory. The Bears finally made the decision.
But it didn't stop there. The wins kept coming as Poles went out and addressed the most pressing need. Between Jonah Jackson, Joe Thuney and Drew Dalman, Poles brought in three brand-new starters across the offensive line and, just like that, that room became a strength.
Poles has received a good amount of praise for his offseason moves so far, and justifiably so. But, as the 2025 NFL Draft kicks off, all of those wins could immediately be forgotten if he slips up in one specific way.
If Ryan Poles blows an opportunity at pick no. 10 overall, fans will quickly turn on him
There are a couple of particular prospects many Bears fans are hoping fall to pick 10 overall. Sure, there is an argument to be had for trading back.
But, if Boise State's Ashton Jeanty or LSU's Will Campbell are available at that point, Poles should be rushing to turn in his pick. Those are the two players that, beyond any shadow of a doubt, the Bears should be sold on selecting if they're on the board.
Take a look back, just two years, when Poles opted to trade back just one spot and allow the Philadelphia Eagles to draft Jalen Carter. Do you think this Bears team would look a bit different with Carter on that defensive line?
You bet it would.
How do Eagles fans feel about the Carter selection? That should tell you all you need to know.
If Poles were to make the same mistake twice in three years, fans wouldn't allow him to live with that decision. Trading back with either Jeanty or Campbell still on the board would be career-threatening.

If we're looking at Jeanty, the Bears have an opportunity to bring in an explosive, game-changing running back. He's the best at a position where the Bears still have question marks. You cannot pass up a player like Jeanty, all things considered.
If he's gone but Campbell somehow makes it to 10, it's a similar story. Forget the idea that Chicago's offensive line could be set with Braxton Jones at left tackle. Forget the question of where exactly Campbell fits best or the silly arm length debate.
Campbell is a nasty, gritty lineman with a mean streak. He breaks the mold. No matter where he plays, he's going to be effective. He is the exact type of player the Bears need (and should want) on that offensive line.
If Poles has an opportunity to draft either Campbell or Jeanty, and he decides to trade back for more "value," then he is not only out of his mind but should be placed squarely back on the hot seat.
