Every draft tends to carry a theme. Some teams focus on winning immediately, while others build more toward the future. Some take safer prospects, while others target upside. The Chicago Bears followed a clear direction in the 2026 NFL Draft, and one of the defining elements of their class was explosiveness.

Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report reviewed each team’s draft and assigned an overall theme. For the Bears, he identified their approach as prioritizing explosiveness, which is supported by the types of players they selected.

"The Chicago Bears added several prospects who will have an opportunity to contribute early in their career. However, two, in particular, are likely to catch fans' attention with their explosiveness and speed as rookies."

The Chicago Bears got explosive in the 2026 NFL Draft

The team’s first-round pick stood out for his speed, posting a strong 40-yard dash while also delivering impressive results in jumping drills. His athletic profile suggests an ability to close space quickly and react with burst, which aligns with how he is expected to be used.

At center, Logan Jones may not be known for traditional explosiveness, but his agility testing was among the best at his position. That quickness in short areas still fits the overall theme, especially for a player expected to operate in tight spaces along the interior offensive line.

At tight end, Sam Roush brings notable athletic upside. Meanwhile, Zavion Thomas was viewed as a reach by some, but his speed is difficult to overlook. His 4.28-second 40-yard dash highlights the type of explosiveness the Bears were targeting.

That trend continued into Day 3. Players such as Malik Muhammad, Keyshaun Elliott, and Jordan van den Berg all bring strong athletic traits. Each may have fallen in the draft for different reasons, but their physical profiles fit the same mold the Bears emphasized throughout their class.

This approach aligns with head coach Ben Johnson and how he wants his team to play. The focus is on speed and creating advantages through quickness and athleticism. Building a roster with that type of profile reflects an intent to push tempo and create mismatches.

At the same time, the overall balance of the roster remains a factor. While explosiveness is a clear strength of this class, teams typically look to combine that with physicality and consistency. The Bears leaned heavily into one side of that equation in this draft, which makes it worth watching how it translates once the season begins.
