Thomas Brown laughs off Shane Waldron's dysfunction with Bears' first Week 12 TD
For the first time this season, the Chicago Bears scored first in a game they were playing.
First quarters have been notoriously slow for the Bears' offense, but in his second game as the Bears' offensive coordinator, Thomas Brown not only orchestrated a scoring drive in the first quarter, but it instantly proved how much of an upgrade he is over Shane Waldron.
Goal-line plays have become a controversial topic for the Bears this offseason. Even since Shane Waldron called for a fullback dive with a backup offensive lineman in Doug Kramer, there has been added attention paid to the struggles of the Bears' offense in the red zone. On Sunday, Brown didn't risk another Kramer fumble. Kramer was on the field as a fullback, serving as an additional blocker, but he cleared the way for a Roschon Johnson touchdown.
To the average football fan, it may not mean much but for the Bears, it should mean everything. Too many times this season, the Bears' offense has done things that have defied logic. Rather than complicate the process, Brown called for the sure-handed Johnson to score the touchdown.
Johnson's touchdown was set up by an incredible pass from Caleb Williams to running back D'Andre Swift.
Brown, Williams, and the Bears' offense deserve credit for how they've handled the vaunted Minnesota Vikings' defense so far. Vikings' defensive coordinator Brian Flores wasted no time in dialing up blitzes but between quick-passes and getting Williams on the move, Brown is showing that he is light years ahead of the Bears' past two coordinators.
