It's not often that we at Bear Goggles On break the fourth wall and let you in on what's happening behind the scenes but this is one of those times.
This January, my wife and I will be welcoming a new addition to our family. We are expecting a beautiful baby girl, and one of the more heated debates as we inch closer to the due date has been the expected fandom of our daughter. My wife is a fan of the Green Bay Packers, while I live with the agony of being a Chicago Bears fan each and every Sunday.
As the Bears have spiraled into deeper dysfunction this season, I have been forced to face my fear: Do I dare pass along the burden of being a Bears fan to my daughter? In my 31 years of life, the Bears have taught me nothing but heartbreak. As any father, I want to make sure that my child experiences nothing but happiness. That desire for happiness from my daughter has led to me seriously questioning whether it would be humane of me to pass down my Bears fandom. My daughter has a Bears' onesie and Packers' onesie in her closet, and rest assured, she will not be wearing her Bears' onesie anytime soon.
The heartbreak of being a Chicago Bears' fan.
The Bears' heartbreaking Week 11 loss to the Packers was another reminder that Bears fans deserve better. Beyond that, it's a reminder that I do not want my daughter to experience the pain of being a Bears fan.
The same pain this young fan felt today.
Wanting to believe a field goal was good despite what our eyes were showing us as fact. It's a feeling that I had in 2018 during that fateful playoff loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. It's a feeling that every Bears fan is used to and it doesn't show any sign of going away.
