Custom Bears Blanket
Pictured above is a custom Chicago Bears quilt that my wife designed and made for me our first Christmas together. I went back home with her to meet her family and she brought the materials with her because she needed to consult with her mother about the project, as her mother is a quilting expert.
I also met her 53 year-old brother, George, a Cowboys fan and avid hunter. He also makes some very good deer jerky. I received a lesson in this, against my wishes, because I was told to. You never know in life when you will have an emergency that requires you to make deer jerky, such as the apocalypse.
As my blanket was getting made by Beth and her mother, it seemed like George got a little jealous, which is understandable. You see, he had a special team quilt, too. Why wasn’t the topic of discussion his, obviously better, more detailed, Cowboys blankie?
He was kind enough to stomp in to the other room and retrieve it for presentation. He pointed out that it had former players names from their championship seasons and the Dallas star symbol embroidered on it, and mine did not. He pointed out that it was one-of-a-kind, handcrafted especially for him, years ago. Wow, what an awesome blanket! Linus would be impressed.
George, I hope the blanket kept you warm while you were curled up in the fetal position watching the game last night.
P.S. Jumping ahead to a few years later and me and Beth have gotten married and have had our son. Robbie really loves his Uncle George and enjoys the John Deere tractor rides, and I have seen a side of George as he relates to my son that I really like, and would like to see more of it. It’s like he is Darth Vader, and I sense there is still good in him.
P.S II I’m just busting George’s balls because he cares nothing about what I have to say and could care less that I am a sports writer, especially about the Bears. Also, while I wish he would read and support my venture with Bear Goggles On, there is some benefit to knowing he won’t be reading this. It’s too bad really. If he listened to me, I would also tell him that our blankets are both special, because they were made with love by women that love us. It doesn’t get any better than that.
