A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about how Marc Trestman was to blame for the Chicago Bears slow start. It seems like the rest of the media are finally catching up after the latest episode of As the Bears Turn. This week’s episode was highlighted with more Jay Cutler turnovers, more bad defense and ended with an explosive locker room scene where players were calling each other out, ripping the fans and had to be removed from the room. On Monday, head coach Marc Trestman was asked about what happened in the post-game locker room and wide receiver Brandon Marshall’s outburst:
"SPECIFICALLY WHAT ABOUT Marshall’S EXPLOSION AFTER THE GAME?Yeah, that’s a good question. I told our team after the game in the locker room just as I’m telling you is that we have to always be accepting of how people express themselves after a game because they’re coming down from a week of working hard and building their emotions and passions for the game. I’m not reading anymore into it than that, and we have to be accepting and non-judgmental and let it pass. That’s the way I’ve handled athletes who get into that state. It’s not the first time. It’s not the first locker room it’s ever happened in. I’m not reading any more into it than that."
Are we running a football team or a Montessori school? As long as everyone is free to express themselves, don’t worry about what chaos is ongoing.
Trestman went full Jauron when asked about players calling each other out:
"DO YOU HAVE TO BE CAREFUL ABOUT PLAYERS CALLING OUT OTHER PLAYERS?I haven’t heard any of that so I don’t think that’s one that has to be addressed. I don’t think that was the case at all yesterday. I didn’t hear all of it. I heard a lot about most of it but what I did hear I did not hear any of that."
Huh? He hasn’t heard any of that, but then he didn’t hear all of it, but he heard a lot about most of it? You got all that? It’s not his show but he’s on that show.
Two notable people have called out Trestman for making this team soft. Former Bears standout Dan Hampton, who does a little media work now with Bears pre and post, thinks that Marc Trestman runs the Bears like a daycare because the Bears don’t have fixed captains for the season, but Trestman picks new captains each week:
"“If you’re in a daycare, you might want to let everyone rotate being captains, because we all want to be fair,” Hampton said. “But this is the Chicago Bears. This is the NFL. The guys that the team votes as captains should be captains every week. Not a bunch of touchy-feely, we’re going to pass out juice boxes. Not, we’re going to let this guy be a captain. And, next week, we’re going to let that guy be a captain. That’s not the way it works.”"
After the big loss on Sunday, former Bears special teamer Blake Costanzo took to Twitter to express his feelings about the Bears coach:
Costanzo spent a couple of seasons with the Bears including Marc Trestman’s first year in 2013. I’m not calling sour grapes, but he was not re-signed as a free agent and ended up back in San Francisco. I’m also not calling Blake soft, but he is on Injured Reserve. Just saying.
So what do you think? Are the Bears soft and if so, has Trestman made them soft?
