Yeah, that was a bit rough to watch. The first taste of football in eight months was, bleak? Awful? Unpromising? Whatever you chose, it wasn’t fun for Chicago Bears fans as the Bears tanked to the Denver Broncos in a 22-0 loss. Here’s the good and bad from the first game of Bears preseason football.

The Good

There’s not much to hang a hat on, but Bryce Callahan was instrumental in creating a turnover by tipping a ball which Jerrell Freeman intercepted. All in all, Callahan made a wonderful play where he showed off some great awareness and range; he turned his body in midair and tipped a Mark Sanchez pass. In what could turn into a cornerback battle, Callahan might make a strong push to start if Porter or Fuller falter.

Deiondre’ Hall also had five tackles and a few pass breakups, making him a fun candidate to watch as the preseason goes on. The rangy corner had one of his breakups in the end zone, breaking up a Bronco touchdown.

The Bad

More like what wasn’t bad. We can start here, though; the offense didn’t score a point.

The offensive line was borderline horrendous. They allowed eight sacks and barely protected Jay Cutler, Brian Hoyer, David Fales or Connor Shaw. Penalties also added up through the line, which already stacks on the issues the offensive line has, with the injury to Grasu and changes to the line in general.

All around, the first string offense looked off, the defense looked out of place and nothing seemed to click. The only positives were special teams I guess, but they were helped out by McManus missing some field goals.

All this being said, all the fans and critics should keep in mind this is only preseason. While that might not be much comfort, this was the first game of the season which doesn’t count in any way. It’s tough to watch, but come regular season time will anyone even remember the first game of the preseason?
