With a great training camp so far, is it Danny Trevathan, and not Roquan Smith who should be nervous of Nick Kwiatkoski

When the Chicago Bears released their first depth chart of the year, it was no shock to see Nick Kwiatkoski starting over Roquan Smith. Kwiatkoski started last year, and with the first round pick still absent from camp, his job has remained unchallenged.

However, one thing we do all know. Roquan Smith is eventually going to start for the Chicago Bears. Maybe it takes him a week or two longer than expected, but he is going to start. Smith is a top ten pick; he is a player drafted off of his ready-made ability. He is going to see the field sooner than later.

With that in mind, some Bears beat reporters are questioning whether or not it could be Trevathan who eventually becomes the odd man out.

It is not like he has been in practice either. Trevathan is slated as a starter beside Kwiatkoski, and after leading the unit last season is going to get that leash. However, Trevathan is 28 now. He has a history of injuries and has not played a full season in a Bears uniform. Next season, he has $1.25 million dead cap hit and would save the team over $6 million if he were released. Trevathan has been great, but would it be the worst thing if Kwiatkowski slowly emerged over him?

The team could use Kwiatkoski to ease Smith along over his first season. When Smith becomes entrenched, the Bears have already talked about him taking over as a play caller. When Smith becomes the teams play caller, it could be time to go back to Kwiatkowski, who has proven starter capability.

Trevathan is going to get every chance to keep his job deep into the season and into next season as well. However, these things seem to have a way of working themselves out. Do not be surprised if Kwiatkoski is finding a way to start across from Trevathan, one way or another.
