Chicago Bears preseason week 2 preview at New York Giants
By Jim Lynch
The Chicago Bears take on the New York Giants tonight for their second game of the preseason. It is business as usual for the Bears, who just want to develop their young talent and try to fine-tune their roster for opening night.
The Bears offense, defense, and special teams all have some great stories going into the second week of the preseason. It is unlikely that Matt Nagy plays any starters so young players will need to step up. Here is the breakdown of the Bears team going into week two.
Offense
The offensive line was anything but impressive last week, however, it was a lot of rookies and Rashaad Coward, a defensive tackle turned offensive lineman.
Obviously, Nagy’s main goal is to bring a high-caliber offensive line forward come week one against the Packers. Right now the Bears need to try to help develop Coward and other young offensive lineman to make sure if a big name gets hurt they can step in.
The Bears also need to give their quarterbacks another chance to succeed in week 2 of the preseason. Neither was that impressive in week one against the Panthers and the last time Chase Daniel played against the Giants this happened.
Daniel has something to prove going into this game, let’s see what he can do.
Defense
The Chicago Bears defense is arguably the best thing Chicago sports fans can watch these days. They are fun, they are fast, and they like to stop any quarterback thrown their way.
The Bears defense will need to continue to improve on their success from last week and try to limit opposing offenses to less third-down conversions. The Bears gave up 5 third-down conversions last week, let’s hope to see more three and outs in week 2. Deon Bush will be called to help lead the young defense with little starters taking any snaps against the Giants tonight.
Special Teams
The war of the kickers will continue yet another week. Elliott Fry and Eddy Pineiro both believe they can and should be the Bears starting kicker. However, a field goal miss by Pineiro and a successful kick from Fry gives Fry the advantage in the eyes of Bears fans. The entire competition can be exhausting at times for the two kickers trying to find job security. Week 2 of the preseason will be yet another opportunity for either kicker to step up.
3 Keys To The Game
The Bears lost their preseason opener last week to the Panthers, although there were some good takeaways from last weeks game, Bears fans want a win. We have a list of players that need to step up in week two. Let’s break down what the Bears need to do to succeed against the Giants.
Play as a unit
The Bears can not afford to take any untimely penalties. Going offsides, or holding, or even pass interference can really just throw momentum the other way especially during a good drive. The Bears need to capitalize on every opportunity they have in week 2, any penalty will ruin the drive.
Don’t mess up any kicks
Do I need to explain this any further? If you are in kicking range against the Giants tonight make the kick. Let’s not see this again.
I know these games and points don’t matter but at the same time, let’s get points on the board with our kickers.
Give opportunities to the young players

David Montgomery played a fantastic game in week one, let’s see that again in the second week of preseason. The Bears need to give their young players a chance to shine in the preseason, players like Ian Bunting should get another opportunity in week 2. Kevin Pierre-Louis should be back in the backfield this week to try to earn his spot.
A lot of the Bears roster now is competing with other players on the roster, that is what preseason is all about. When it comes to game time though, everything is about beating the opponent with the best group out on the field.
The Giants won last week against the Jets 31-22. Bears fans should be excited for the opportunity the Bears have in week two of the preseason.
The Giants will be rotating both Eli Manning and Daniel Jones at the quarterback position, both can give the Bears defense a challenge and will be great practice for the regular season.
Kickoff is at 6:30 CT between the Giants and Bears!
