Chicago Bears: Driving down the field

The Chicago Bears knew they were playing a team that has been struggling in the first two weeks. The offensive performance was a tale of two halves, the first half starting to make strides and in the second half, taking a couple of steps back.

Taylor Gabriel was the highlight of the Bears offense, especially in the second quarter, where he scored three touchdowns alone, the last Chicago Bear to score three touchdowns in one quarter was a man named Gale Sayers back in 1965. However, Gabriel left the game in the third quarter with a concussion injury.

Booger McFarland said on the ESPN broadcast that the Bears offense does not have to be like the Kansas City Chiefs, but to take advantage of their defense giving them solid field position after an opposition turnover. Mitchell Tribusky showed some promise and gave Bears fans a reason to be a little pessimistic. Perhaps his best TD pass happened when Gabriel caught a pass as he was about to go out of bounds in the end zone when he was able to get two feet down.

On the other hand, Trubisky underthrew a receiver in the corner of the end zone that if thrown to the other side of the end zone would have been a touchdown.

The Bears were able to establish a running game last Sunday in Denver but the running game was largely non-existent in Washington. On a couple of occasions, Trubisky has had receivers open and has overthrown them and that is the biggest concern with #10 in blue and orange. Trubisky has underthrown passes on a few occasions and if he can improve on that, the sky is the limit.

Going forward, the Bears need to avoid the 2nd/3rd and 30-yard situations as a result of penalties. The NFL is in week 3 and about to start week 4, the excuse of not playing the regulars in the preseason is not good enough. I give credit to the offense for taking advantage of the turnovers the defense forced, but when it counts the most, they will need to score from their own 25 to win against better teams.

Trubisky was very accurate even with some of the issues in the passing game. He went 25-31 in passing for 231 yards, 3 TDs, and 1 interception. Overall, the Bears offense had a solid night, but there is room for improvement and it is to be relentless and not give the opposition a feeling that they can come back. The offense does not have to resemble the Chiefs but the key is to not put the offense in precarious situations where the other team can take away the ball and score easily. Keep the offense in manageable situations and the Bears should be in fine condition.
