Derek Wolfe – Denver Broncos

Ryan Pace should consider calling up his old Defensive Coordinator and now Head Coach of the Denver Broncos, Vic Fangio. Then, he should speak with Broncos General Manager John Elway. The phone calls need to be about the availability of Derek Wolfe.

The Broncos are 1-4 on the season and I do not see them getting any better. The team is definitely not a playoff team. The Broncos have been rumored to be willing to trade off assets this season. Could they be like Miami and decide to tank for Tua Tagovailoa? Joe Flacco is not a spring chicken and Tagovailoa is supposed to be a franchise-changing quarterback.

One of the players that have been rumored to be available is Derek Wolfe. Wolfe is in the last year of his contract. He is 29 years old but has been fairly consistent throughout his career. Wolfe is not a great pass rusher, but he is decent and strong against the run. He would fill in nicely on this defense and could be the void left by the Akiem Hicks injury.

Wolfe had a breakout rookie year in 2012 with six sacks and 40 combined tackles. He had back-to-back seasons with 5.5 sacks in 2015 and 2016. Last season he only finished with 1.5 sacks, but he finished with 43 combined tackles on the year. The Chicago Bears defensive line cannot take another big blow. Depth was a concern going into the season, and this could help solve things.

Ryan Pace and the Bears are without a third and fourth-round pick, but I would guess they could get Wolfe for a fifth.
