Bill George

Former Chicago Bears’ linebacker Bill George was the giveaway bobblehead in the preseason’s fourth week. George is famous for becoming one of the first true middle linebackers in the game and helped pioneer the position for the Bears. Some great middle linebackers have come since George played his last down for Chicago.

George came to Chicago in the second round of the 1951 NFL Draft out of Wake Forest University. This perennial Pro Bowler started his career in a different position and then moved to be the team and the leagues’ first middle linebacker. With this, this move also helped to create the 4-3 defense.

He had a productive career as a defender recovering 19 fumbles and 18 interceptions. He also managed to do a little kicking to help the team out.

George was selected to be a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1974 and in addition to that, he had his number retired by the Bears.

He died in September of 1982 in a car accident.
