5 Chicago Bears players who should be shut down for the year
2. Cornelius Lucas
The Chicago Bears offensive line has been an issue this year. However, the fact is that they are not going to make sweeping changes to this unit.
To start, James Daniels and Cody Whitehair are locked into their spots. They need to play the next two games as they are still gelling with Mitch Trubisky after swapping positions. Charles Leno and Bobby Massie have dead cap hits of over $7 million and $10 million respectively. The team may add depth, but those two are likely back in their spots next year.
Right guard is going to see change, but with Rashad Coward starting, he gives them their best look at the future. Not much is going to change.
Still, the Bears can bench Cornelius Lucas for the next two games and see what they have in UDFA Alex Bars. Massie may not lose his job in 2020, but 2020 is likely his last year in Chicago.
Bars have a lot of upside, and can play right guard or right tackle. Lucas is a journeyman veteran with no upside.
It makes sense to start the veteran over a UDFA off of a knee injury when the playoffs are on the line. However, if Bars fails Sunday, it only gives the team a baseline to build off of. Getting looks at Bars and Coward helps for 2020 and those are the two who need to play the most in the next two weeks.
