Bashaud Breeland

The next option for the Chicago Bears would be signing Bashaud Breeland. Breeland has yet to re-sign with the Kansas City Chiefs. Not quite as young as Eli Apple, Breeland is 28 years old. He does have a Super Bowl ring though. He also has been a slightly better ball hawk with 12 interceptions over his six-year career.

Breeland was drafted by Washington in the fourth round of the 2014 NFL Draft. He started 15 games that season. He has been a starter everywhere else he has played. Breeland spent a season in Gren Bay and then with the Chiefs. He clearly has no problems fitting in with a new team or defense. Breeland would easily win the starting spot across from Kyle Fuller.

If we look at his advanced stats the last two years, we will see he has been fantastic for both the Packers and Chiefs. Despite 13 penalties for the Chiefs last season, Breeland only allowed a 92.2 quarterback rating while being targeted. He let up 30 of 62 targets for a 48.4 percent completion percentage. His downfall was allowing five touchdowns.

In seven games for the Packers in 2018, Breeland saw even better success. He let up 51.55 percent completion percentage when targeted, but he never let up a touchdown. While targeted in 2018, quarterbacks struggled mightily and only saw a 49.9 quarterback rating.

With numbers like these, why is Breeland available for a discount? Missed tackles for one is a problem. Breeland has averaged a missed tackle rate of over 17 percent over the last two years. That is in comparison to Prince Amukamara at only six percent. Then, obviously the penalties I mentioned earlier are a problem. He averaged 1.2 penalties per game the last two seasons. The good news is the Chicago Bears defense is good enough to overcome that issue.
