Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Did you hear about how the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are trying to trade O.J. Howard? It makes little sense to me, but rumors are that the team wants a second-round pick for Howard. The Bucs are now in “win now” mode because they signed Tom Brady this offseason to replace Jameis Winston. We all know how Brady loves his tight ends, so why move on from Howard?

If the Buccaneers do make this trade, that leaves them with only Cameron Brate. Brate is a solid tight end and Brady will like him. However, he does not have the upside as Howard. If Howard is gone, the Buccaneers should bring in another veteran tight end. In could step Trey Burton. The Buccaneers run plenty of two tight end sets and Burton might see the most playing time if he were to land in Tampa Bay.

Again, just like every other team, Burton would not earn a big contract from the Bucs. The team has a good amount of salary-cap space, but Burton has not proven himself enough to earn more than $8 to $10 million dollars over a two-year deal.

Again, anything at this point, even the veteran minimum, helps the Chicago Bears out in 2020. As the NFL Draft approaches, the team will need roughly $4 to $5 million just for the rookie contracts. Nearly $1 million dollars in extra savings from cutting Burton would be fantastic. The closer he earns to $4 million the better. This is why we should pay attention to where Burton lands and how much he earns for the 2020 season.
