Chicago Bears Quarterback Battles: Mitchell Trubisky versus Baker Mayfield
Trubisky vs. Darnold: Counting Stats
Alright, let us take a look at each quarterback’s counting stats. These include touchdowns and interceptions. These are honestly the stats that truly matter in the end. To win games, teams must find a way to score. Turnovers are however how teams find themselves giving up points and losing. Just like in the comparison versus Sam Darnold, Trubisky won the first two groupings, but it was much closer when comparing him to Mayfield. Will the counting stats do him in?
Over the last two seasons, Mayfield has thrown 49 touchdowns to Trubisky’s 41. When broken down per game, Mayfield averages 1.6 versus Trubisky at 1.4 touchdowns. Looking at the number of touchdowns from the ground, Trubisky beats Mayfield with five over the last two years whereas Mayfield has three. This breaks down to 0.2 rushing touchdowns per game for Trubisky and 0.1 for Mayfield. When totaled out, Mayfield wins with a total of 52 to 46.
Now, for the interceptions. Trubisky has thrown 22 interceptions between 2018 and 2019. In that same span, Mayfield has thrown 35. This is a significant difference and although Mayfield has six more touchdowns, 13 interceptions separate the two. Mayfield has one more game under his belt over the two years too, so if we use the per-game averages, Trubisky would have an extra touchdown pass. This again has to go to Trubisky but by only a slight margin.
Winner: Mitchell Trubisky
There are other stats to look into, but these are enough to show that Trubisky is currently a better quarterback than Baker Mayfield right now. So far, Trubisky is 2-0 in these comparisons. Who is next?
