Jerry Azumah is a really underrated cornerback in recent Chicago Bears history

4. Jerry Azumah, CB

I have written about Azumah more extensively which can be read here. Some of my earliest football memories include Jerry Azumah and that ferocious defense from the early 2000s. As good as the whole unit was, Azumah is not talked about enough for how he good he was as a defender and kick returner.

Jerry Azumah had a brief, yet productive career with the Chicago Bears. He played for seven years in the NFL, all of which were with Chicago. It took him a couple of years to get on the field as a starter but once he did, he showed he was more than deserving of the role.

By 2001, his third year, Azumah was the Bears number one cornerback and was putting up some really good defensive stats as well. He was getting a reputation around the league as someone with good ball skills and was voted to the Pro Bowl in 2003.

Injuries were wearing on Azumah towards the end but from about 2001-2004 was someone who the Bears were able to rely upon time and time again to step up in key situations. It’s a shame he couldn’t play longer because I feel he may be remembered more fondly if he did.
