The Chicago Bears swung big and missed on Russell Wilson and could very well be on their way to missing in the draft as well. We have a long way to go, but the San Francisco 49ers trading up to number three on Friday has to be looked at as bad news for the Bears pursuit of a first-round quarterback.

By all accounts, Trevor Lawrence, Zach Wilson, Trey Lance, Justin Fields, and Mac Jones are the top five quarterbacks, and all five are expected to go in round one. The Chicago Bears are hoping one of these five falls before they have to decide between names such as Kyle Trask, Kellen Mond, and Davis Mills.

For the Bears to acquire one of the top five quarterbacks from pick 20, they will need someone to fall. The issue is whether that will happen. The 49ers trading up to number three all but assures that the first three picks will be quarterbacks.

The New York Jets had no interest in trading down with San Fran, which tells you everything you need to know about their plans. San Frans investment tells you they go QB.

So, we are now at pick four, with 15 to go until 20 and the Bears are hoping for just two quarterbacks to fall now.

The issue with that is that the bidding now starts at pick four. The 49ers used two future firsts to get from 12 to 3. The Bears offered three future firsts for Russell Wilson. They may need to offer the Wilson package just to get the fourth-drafted quarterback in the 2021 class.

Picks four through seven could very well be trade-up candidates, but we know that the Panthers at pick eight are thirsty for a quarterback. Denver at pick nine may have similar thoughts. The realization is that these two have a path to the top six than the Bears.

Beyond that, let’s say the Falcons do trade down, and a quarterback goes fourth overall. Now, the Bears are hoping a QB falls all the way from five to 20. Or once again, they are in a spot where they have to fear whoever did not trade up to four and is ahead of them.

This can extend to Washington and New England, especially when it comes down to just one more name left.

There are four teams just briskly named off who pick higher than the Bears and are realizing that the QB market in round one has shrunk from five to two very quickly. Those hoping for Mac Jones to fall to 20 may soon realize that if four quarterbacks ahead of his goes in the four top, he could last as far as 9.

We will see how things play out, but as each quarterback finds a home, and there are fewer options available to Chicago, things get direr.
