Chicago Bears: 3 Justin Fields stats to get excited about
1. Justin Fields rushing component for Chicago Bears
So many analysts and stats junkies will pull Justin Fields passing stats and compare him to quarterbacks such as Jimmy Clausen without factoring in that Fields has a much higher floor built-in because of his rushing component. This buys him time as a passer that was never afforded to Clausen.
In fact, Fields ranks eighth all-time in rushing yards by a quarterback. That is not how you want your QB to consistently win, but it shows that you have a rather rare situation here compared to your typical rookie gunslinger.
The only quarterbacks to rush for more than Fields were Robert Griffin, Cam Newton, Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, Vince Young, Kyler Murray, and Russell Wilson. Some did not turn out, but it speaks to the reality that Fields cannot be compared to a normal quarterback.
It also shows why a head coach would be interested. He has the legs that have made teams pay already. He pushes the ball deep down the field and is never afraid to get aggressive. Beyond that, he is a playmaker.
So, the consistency, the pieces, the small details all need to be ironed out. When this is the start of what you are working with, it is easy to get very excited.
