There is a clear path for Mitch Trubisky to start in 2022

Mitch Trubisky saw a very up and down career here in Chicago. One thing you can say about the young quarterback is that he didn’t have the developmental help needed from his head coach. Matt Nagy clearly failed him as he was also failing Justin Fields this past year. Whether you want to blame Nagy as I just did or still think Trubisky is a bust, one thing is certain — Trubisky has been working with a much better team in Buffalo and I think he made the right choice to go and back up Josh Allen.

Playing quarterback for the Chicago Bears is not an easy task. This city loves to hate you quickly. Quarterbacks who play here need to have a very thick skin, as I think even Justin Fields is starting to see. Fields saw an embrace by this city when he was drafted unlike Trubisky saw in 2017. That shouldn’t matter though as I think Trubisky started to prove he was too mentally weak to handle the pressure. Let’s hope that Justin Fields doesn’t follow the same path.

I want to back up for one second as I am not trying to convince anyone that Trubisky was a better talent coming out of college than Justin Fields. I would take Justin Fields over Trubisky every day of the week. I am a huge proponent of Fields and see way more talent and ability in him than I ever saw in Trubisky. If you read my work consistently, you may remember that I was a big Deshaun Watson fan and wanted the Bears to hold and take him with the third-overall pick.

Mitch Trubisky could push to start in 2022 if these dominoes fall into place

After signing a one-year deal with the Buffalo Bills, Mitch Trubisky could find himself an opportunity to push for a starting job in 2022. There is a clear path that could truly help him in this process and one key domino fell into place already — the New York Giants hired former Bills assistant general manager Joe Schoen to be their next general manager.

Now, many are speculating that Brian Daboll or Leslie Frazier could be the leading candidates to take over the Giants head coaching gig. Daboll is currently the offensive coordinator of the Bills and Frazier is currently the defensive coordinator. Nothing will happen officially until the Bills win the Super Bowl or are eliminated from the playoffs. Should either of these two be hired, there is a chance Mitch Trubisky could be courted to play in New York.

Now, being mentally weak in Chicago and going to New York does not sound ideal, but there is clearly familiarity here if either of these two were to be brought in as the next head coach. Daniel Jones has struggled and in my opinion, is a worse quarterback than Trubisky. The Giants have two first-round picks thanks to trading with the Bears in the 2021 draft (the Justin Fields trade). The problem is that this quarterback class is not the greatest and bringing in Trubisky on a cheap deal could help them in the short term.

Should Joe Schoen bring Mitch Trubisky in, I think it would be the clearest path for the former Chicago Bears quarterback to find his way into a starting lineup again. There are a few other teams that will likely have some quarterback competitions, but that familiarity here would likely play a big factor.
