The Chicago Bears have not yet decided on their next General Manager, but it does appear that it is coming down to the final few. Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated commented on two names that he believes to be highly regarded in Chicago. Those are Morocco Brown and Ryan Poles.

Brown has been connected to the Chicago Bears from the moment that they fired Ryan Pace, but Poles is someone that has risen due to his interview. The Bears gave him a chance, and he excelled to the point where they want him back for a second chat.

The difference between Morocco Brown and Ryan Poles could be huge for the Chicago Bears. The big difference is that one is tied to Bill Polian, while the other is not.

Here is what Breer wrote about Ryan Poles.

"The Bears’ Bill Polian/Tony Dungy–connected candidates—Jim Caldwell, Leslie Frazier and Colts DC Matt Eberflus—have emerged as top names in Chicago. Hiring Poles could mean changing course a bit."

As noted, Brown has been considered a top candidate before even interviewing. That is because Polian has been pushing him. Polian has pushed an arraigned marriage between one of his favorite people at GM, and one of his favorites at HC. This is usually how hires go poorly.

They should not be decided before someone even gets a chance to interview. With that in mind, the contrast is that Poles was not coming in with the internal push. He is coming fresh, and he is still being considered because he was that strong of a candidate.

Poles wowed them in the interviews and showed that he is prepared. To be able to compete, and potentially beat out a candidate that has the political pull from the inside would show what type of candidate he is.

Beyond that, Poles would expand the head coaching search. Breer mentioned Todd Bowles and Brian Flores being connected to Poles, but the reality is that any hire by Morocco Brown will be Polian guided, where Poles will look to the best candidate.

It may not be fair to judge each candidate based on small pieces of news, but it is the process behind the decisions. Brown is the one being pushed because of exterior motives, while Poles is the one standing out because he is deserved. It will tell us a lot about their decision-making to see whether they stick to what Polian wants, or actually hire the best candidate.
