The Chicago Bears have decided that Ryan Poles will be their General Manager. While the team does already have three finalists for a head coaching job lined up, the reports are also that the team will let Ryan Poles interview each one by himself, and that he can make a decision on any of them, or even neither.
So, the question becomes, what if he does interview all three and feels as though he wants a new name or two in the mix? The first name to look towards is Brian Flores. While most reports say that Flores is not a finalist, Albert Breer also says that we should not rule out Flores.
One thing that is worth noting is that Brian Flores and Ryan Poles were both on the 2003 Boston College football team. Brian Flores suffered an injury that ended his playing career, while Poles was a redshirt. Nobody knows how extensive their relationship is, but the reality is that they have been in the same fraternity of BC players in the NFL landscape for a while now.
When you add in their relationship on the field to the fact that Breer mentioned him as a potential coaching option, this should be telling for Bears fans.
While most Bears fans think that these are the final three candidates, the fact that Flores is still being floated out there shows how much Ryan Poles has control of this situation. The Bears ownership may not have given Flores a pass to the final round of interviews, but if the GM they decided on is interested in him he is still going to get his chance.
The next two days will be very interesting and is going to show us how much power Ryan Poles has. We know that he will do three interviews at the very least. Whether he does more, and who that interview is could be what leads us to the next Chicago Bears head coach.
