Chicago Bears Blue-Chip Player: Jaylon Johnson, CB

Some Chicago Bears (and NFL) fans might disagree with me on this one, but Jaylon Johnson is a blue-chip player on this roster. The Bears have an issue with their defensive backs, but Jaylon Johnson is not one of them. Johnson only has one interception over his first two years in the league, but that’s partly because quarterbacks don’t throw his way.

Last season, Johnson finished with 15 passes defended before going on season-ending injured reserve for his shoulder. That was good for ninth in the NFL and Johnson only played in 13 games. This year, Johnson’s health was not a true concern and this is great news for the Bears’ future. In 15 games, Johnson finished with only nine passes defended but was still very efficient.

When we look at Johnson’s advanced stats, he was targeted 78 times in 2020 and saw that number drop to 72 in 2021. I know that sounds close to the same, but remember that Johnson played in two more games this season than he did last — meaning his targets per game dropped from six to 4.8 on average. This is worth noting in my opinion.

In his rookie season, receivers caught 56.4% of their targets when throwing in Jaylon Johnson’s direction. This season they caught 59.7%. He has given up five touchdowns in each season, but remember that he is also covering top wide receivers like Davante Adams and Mike Evans. These receivers are amazing for a reason and of course, they will get the best of even the greatest corners at times.
