Chicago Bears Free Agency 2022 Stay or Go: Deon Bush
The Chicago Bears have a new General Manager making decisions on the roster. Deon Bush was a long-time Ryan Pace pick that stuck around the roster throughout his tenure. Sherrick McManis was once a player who was signed before Ryan Pace and lasted well into his tenure, will Deon Bush make a similar impact on Ryan Poles and his staff?
Chicago Bears should bring back Deon Bush
Deon Bush has a role and he knows it, and that is what has kept him on the team for so long. To start, he is a long-time special teams asset. He plays on five of the six special teams phases and is looked at as a starter or one of the top assets on these units.
Running downhill and tackling is what Bush is best at, so it is no surprise he stands out on special teams. Beyond that, there is a role for that on defense. In dime, you can find spots and times to make the most out of Deon Bush.
He can come into the box and take a slower linebacker out, and still bring physicality. Beyond that, he is better in coverage. Bush is going to sign cheap and as a depth special teams asset, the team could do worse.
Chicago Bears should let Deon Bush walk
Last season the Chicago Bears called upon Bush to play the most he has ever played on defense. It went rather poorly. You saw first-hand that he is limited in his upside, and can’t be looked at as a starter. Beyond that, he suffered an injury in his extended look.
Even in dime, has limitations and it is not like you can trust him to defend big tight ends. In fact, when DeAndre Houston-Carson was healthy he outperformed Bush. It brought up questions of whether or not DHC is better than Bush, to begin with.
With that in mind, if the prices are the same, or DHC is coming in cheaper, he is the much better bet to bring back. It was a nice run with Deon Bush, but he is depth at best, and even in that regard, you could probably find better and cheaper.
